PRINCIPLES OF DECORATIVE DESIGN (London, no date [1873])

By Christopher Dresser. Facsimile reprint of 2nd edition, 1873, containing 184 black and white illustrations and two color plates. Dresser, an important commercial and industrial designer of the 19th century, exercised great influence over decoration and design in the English Arts and Crafts style. In Principles of Decorative Design he distilled a wealth of knowledge and ideas into a rich commentary on the aesthetics and practical considerations employed in the decorative arts of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Beginning with a discussion of historic styles and color theory, Dresser moves on to present his opinions on furniture, ceiling and wall decoration, carpets, curtains and woven fabrics, pottery, glassware, metalwork, decorative hardware, and stained glass. Softcover. 167 pages.
